Artist Statement:
I decided to make a decorative seashell vase that holds tokens inside that each have a different symbol carved into them. The tokens include a flower, a water drop, a sun, and waves. The shell is smaller at the base then has a wider mouth once reaching the mouth.
Originally I was searching for artists that make organic vases then I came across an artist named Owen Charles Mann, who makes ceramic flowers that are beautiful. I then thought about other things that are found in nature and I eventually came to the idea of a seashell. The elements of design that are most prominent in this piece are form, line, and eventually there will be color.
As I was making this piece I had up north in mind. Each time I go to the beaches up there , the cities they're in all have little gift shops with decorative pieces like this one. They sell things like vases but also things like little chips or stones that can go in them so I decided to combine the two.
Overall I'm proud of how this turned out, I think the shell itself was successful although it could be a little more leveled on the top, and for the tokens I like them but I could've made more of them so that they could fill the vase.
